If you are in the competition of ten runners being 2nd means you are behind off 1 person and being ahead of 8 persons means your are the second best amongst the 10 people.
A lot of time we hear people saying that they are okay to be in the second place in the competition at least they are not the last one. Try to imagine if this competition is just two persons to compete, are you still happy to be in the second place?!
